HLA B27 Test in Ahmedabad – Flowcytometry and PCR
HLA-B27 test is used to detect Class I MHC protein in the body which is the genetic marker for spondyloarthritides.
Around 90% of patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS Back pain, 10% false negative) has this test positive in contrast to only 8% of normal people (false positive) will have this test positive.
It is done by two methods in a clinical laboratory : PCR and Flow cytometry.
Difference between the two :
PCR (polymerase chain reaction) : HLA B27 by PCR is the best sensitive/specific test for Ankylosing spondylitis , but little costlier than flow and time it takes 2-3 days in comparison to flow which is available in 1 day.
Flow cytometry HLA B-27 test : In certain cases, there is indeterminate result with flow, which is then to be followed up by PCR test (separate cost)
