AFP is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac and the fetal liver during fetal development.
High AFP levels are found in 70% of cases of primary hepatocellular carcinomas and nonseminomatous germinal tumors of the testes.
Elevated AFP levels may also be found in other pathologies: acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, cancers of the gastrointestinal tract with or without hepatic metastases, congenital tyrosinosis and ataxia telangiectasia.
